About MCPI

The land conserved along the coast of Maine in the next 20 years will largely define the character of Maine’s coast – the character passed on to and known by future generations forever.

Currently, Maine is an attractive target for coastal development. Parcel by parcel, natural lands and traditional working waterfronts are being converted to other uses. A recent study by the State Planning Office predicts that, if current trends continue, the majority of Maine’s coast will be classifiable as “suburban/urban” by the year 2050. However, a well-planned coast that preserves the region’s scenic beauty and unique character is still possible.

In recognition of the critical need and many opportunities to increase the pace and effectiveness of coastal land conservation in Maine, the MCPI was formed.

The principal partners of the Initiative are

• Maine State Planning Office
• Land Trust Alliance
• National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center

In addition to the founders, a coalition of over 70 coastal organizations is working in collaboration to create and implement a Strategic Conservation Framework to protect Maine’s priority coastal and estuarine habitats, recreational and working access to coastal and marine resources, and significant scenic and cultural features along the coast.
